SARMAN AND CANADIAN COAST GUARD TO CONDUCT RESCUE EXERCISE ON LAKE WINNIPEG VICTORIA BEACH
Search and Rescue Manitoba (SARMAN) and the Canadian Coast Guard will conduct an extensive search and rescue operational exercise on the south basin of Lake Winnipeg north of Victoria Beach on Saturday, July 18.
The exercise will engage marine, air and ground search and rescue personnel and technology in a real-time operational response to a critical marine incident involving the rescue of in-water casualties. Canadian Coast Guard cutter Vakta, based in Gimli, will act as the command and control vessel.
The exercise will use a realistic and challenging environment to test the response and communication capabilities of the Canadian Coast Guard and its auxiliary as well as the following SARMAN partners:
Media are welcome to attend the exercise and are asked to report to the Victoria Beach Fire Hall located on PTH 59 in the Victoria Beach townsite at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18 for a briefing.
The Canadian Coast Guard will provide limited opportunities for media to board the Vakta and witness a staged person-in-water recovery and pacing exercise in close proximity on Friday, July 17. Media interested in this opportunity are asked to state their interest no later than 10 a.m. tomorrow. Media selected must be willing to attend an advance safety briefing, adhere to all Canadian Coast Guard safety regulations and provide emergency contact information.
SARMAN represents the policing authorities responsible for search and rescue in Manitoba, the federal and provincial search and rescue authorities in the province, as well as those agencies with a mandated role to support search and rescue efforts in the province including the recognized provincial volunteer network.
